One of the world’s most popular gifs, clipped from a classic The Simpson's episode, Homer Loves Flanders (Season 5, Episode 16) – which in turn has become a modern day shorthand for ‘I’m absolutely not getting involved’ – has finally infiltrated fashion. It comes to the Adidas Stan Smith as part of the ongoing The Simpsons x Adidas collaboration almost thirty years after the episode, which you can catch on Disney+ (not an ad, just a reminder) – originally aired.
Why the Stan Smith? Other than being an exemplary, unproblematic all-rounder, the tennis silhouette was seemingly chosen because its traditional use of green works well for a collab centred largely on Flander's shrubbery.
There's the hedge-inspired chenille heel tab complete with Homer embroidery; 'Homer Simpson' in gold lettering on the lateral side of the shoe; the tongue logo that swaps out the usual portrait of the silhouette’s namesake (tennis legend Stan Smith) with an illustration of the Duff Beer-guzzling Springfieldian.
The release also comes with a special-edition insole that’s verdant green, leather lined and finished with a dual-branded stitched label, and is packaged inside a green – rather than blue – shoe box bedecked with the focal image of Homer backing into the hedge, as well as the Adidas Three Stripes, the Adidas Originals logo and The Simpsons logo.
It follows in the footsteps of November 2022’s The Simpsons x Adidas Superstar ‘Marge Simpson’ which also employed a fluffy material but to a much greater extent. Almost the entire upper of the retro model was covered in a blue fleece that depicted the matriarch’s impossible blue beehive.
