Our second favourite burgundy icon to have emerged from the mid-noughties (our first being Ron) returns to usher in autumn '23. We're talking about the impending Air Jordan 5 SE ‘burgundy’ SNKRS drop which treads on the heels of the Air Jordan 4 ‘thunder’ re-release in a trend that sees Jordan Brand revisiting popular colourways from 2006. Call it Jumpman's contribution to fashion's Y2K renaissance.
The sneak, originally released under Jordan Brand's short-lived 'Lifestyle Series', unites a burgundy suede upper with white stitching, light graphite details (see the sockliner; the insole; the laces; the shark teeth on the midsole; the inner component of the lace lock; the heel embroidery) and a silver reflective tongue that harks back to OG colourways (‘fire red’, ‘black metallic’ etc.). Not to mention an outsole complete with icy herringbone traction units – an element discoverable on all variations of the 1990 model.
The box is less familiar, as the Nike subline opts for a modern retro design used for recent drops, like the Air Jordan 5 SE ‘craft’, over the one used for the original release. The new-look packaging is decorated with Jordan Brand’s signature cement pattern – a pattern that also adorns the tissue paper found inside – and a discoidal emblem finished with a
burgundy Jumpman logo.
If rumours are to be believed, the forthcoming 'burgundy' drop precedes a reissue of the Air Jordan 5 'olive', another 2006 colourway released under the 'Lifestyle Series'. The military take on the silhouette – a union of earthy shades of green with a safety orange – is said to be locked in for spring 2024.
The Air Jordan 5 SE ‘burgundy’ drops in sizes UK3-14 on Saturday 12 August, priced at £199.95. Participate in the SNKRS raffle at 8 am for a shot at securing a pair for retail price from Nike, and, for extra chances, enter the raffles on End, Sns (app) and Bstn.
Alternatively, head over to resale marketplaces StockX and The Edit Ldn to grab a pair at your convenience.
