The past five years have been kind to Nike's Air Jordan 1. The sneaker's iconic legacy was reaffirmed by the release of Netflix's wildly successful The Last Dance doc, and it enjoyed a starring role on the big screen too.
Released in 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a bleeding-edge animated feat that followed would-be superhero Miles Morales through his web-slinging, wall-crawling beginnings, and he wore the Air Jordan 1 High ‘Chicago’ throughout. To mark the film's release and build on the burgeoning AJ1 hype, Nike dropped a special edition of the shoe – aptly dubbed ‘origin story’.
This month, the Spider-Verse x Jordan partnership continues with ‘next chapter’ – an Air Jordan 1 High that celebrates the June release of the second instalment in the planned trilogy, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. And if history repeats itself, it may just well mark the start of another peak for the world-renowned basketball silhouette.
Akin to its predecessor, ‘next chapter’ is a spin on the Air Jordan 1 High ‘Chicago’ – the OG colourway of the 1985 silhouette favoured by Miles Morales. Ergo, the shoe primarily works with a red, white and black palette, brought to life by vivid touches that pay homage to the Marvel (Sony-owned) franchise's animation style and, in turn, get your Spidey Senses tingling.
The most conspicuous detail that sets ‘next chapter’ apart from a conventional ‘Chicago’ is the comic book-esque graphic that adorns the collar overlay and eyestay fragment. These multicoloured components add an extra dimension to the design, not to mention draw attention to the unusual yet subtle iridescent sheen of the black sidewall swoosh and collar.
‘Next chapter’ also stands out for its use of mismatched red leather and suede segments that make up the toe, mudguard and heel sections of the sneaker. The application of various variants of the same textile nods to the multiversal narrative of the upcoming flick – particularly the manifold versions of Spider-Man confirmed to appear.
The obvious aside, keen eyed Jordanheads will notice that ‘next chapter’ reinstates ‘Chicago’ design choices that ‘origin story’ tampered with. This includes the colour of the tongue label and the outsole (red once more, rather than blue).
It's important to note that these elements are by no means traditional. The tongue label doesn't actually wrap around the tongue like it usually would, it’s simply stitched atop. As for the outsole, it glows in the dark – perhaps alike a 'Chicago' from an alternate universe.
