As you can probably tell by now, we’re fully fledged members of the massage gun fan club. But, if you want to see what all the fuss is about without spending over the odds, this offering from RENPHO is your best bet.

It might not pick up many style points, but it does everything you would expect from a massage gun for under £100 — can’t say fairer than that.

The RENPHO Massage Gun comes with five interchangeable heads that move easily over muscles and provide a thorough massage. The handle does vibrate quite a lot, especially when it’s cranked up to the max speed setting, but that’s the extent of our gripes.

If it’s innovation you’re after, HoMedics has got you covered. This tech-heavy massage gun can heat to 47C, giving a hot massage perfect for getting your blood pumping ahead of a workout. Alternatively, you can pop the interchangeable ‘cold head’ in the freezer for a few hours then attach it for an effective post-gym cooldown — impressive stuff.

It was quiet and light for its size, making it easier to wield, and all six massage head attachments moved smoothly over skin without any uncomfortable bumping or catching. The carry case is a bit bulky, so it might not be one for those always on the move, but that was our only gripe.

Therabody knows its way around a massage gun — products from its Theragun range take up almost a quarter of our tried and tested list. A step down from the PRO, the Elite will still grant you access to the Therabody App and has the same trademark triangular grip that proved so popular with our expert.

There are plenty of variables to play with, displayed on an OLED screen found on the handle, which we found made it much easier to control. It’s not short on power either, with Therabody claiming it can reach 60% deeper into muscle than average massagers, thanks to a hardcore 16mm amplitude. Similar to its pricier counterpart, it was far from silent, but that’s a small blot on an otherwise exemplary performance.

Designed by expert physical therapists Bob Schrupp and Brad Heineck, the Mini Q2 makes big claims for such a little gadget. It boasts that it’s a top-quality muscle treatment and one of the most compact models on the market.

In the lab, those claims proved well-founded, though. It’s powerful with five speed settings and moved smoothly over the skin. Despite its pocket-friendly size, it also has a generous selection of attachments – five in total, which is even more than some larger, leading competitors – and they all fit into a handy, lightweight carry case.

It only lost a few points as the ergonomically designed handle is a bit small for those with larger hands.

When it comes to the new Hypervolt Go2, good things do come in small packages. The pocket-sized gadget will easily slip into most gym bags, but it’s more than powerful enough to pummel your waning muscles back to their prime.

The sleek white finish gives it a premium feel and our expert was impressed by how easily the head glided over skin. We would’ve liked a case, but the compact, lightweight design cement its portability credentials.

Powerful and effective, the MuscleGun Carbon was able to glide seamlessly over our muscles, providing much-needed relief from some particularly unpleasant post-gym pain. It was the unique long, curved handle that really made it stand out from the crowd though. Our tester found this clever design granted them access to all aches, however awkward they were to reach.

The massage gun itself was a little heavy for our liking, and the handle vibrates when you crank up the speed. But, the selection of four massage heads, robust carry case, smart handle design and near-impeccable performance still earned it the runner-up spot.

The new Theragun Pro has landed and it’s every bit as good as we’d hoped. It’s packed with a host of impressive new features, but the stand-out upgrade is the high-res OLED screen mounted on the handle. It offers four visually guided built-in routines (sleep, warm-up, recovery and break) so you can blast your muscles without having to peer at your phone – our tester was a big fan of this feature.

If you prefer something more personalised, there are heaps of tutorials to choose from via the Therabody app. On-screen visuals show exactly where you need to massage, which motions to use and how long for. And, if you link it up with Apple Health or Strava, it will even suggest massages based on your recent workouts.

The PRO also boasts an EQ-150 brushless motor which promises to be 20% quieter (sure enough, it earned top marks in our in-house testing) and a handsome, velvet-lined case which neatly fits the device, charger and six heads.

The only downside is the eye-watering expensive price tag. If you take your fitness and recovery seriously, go ahead and invest. But if you just need something simple to tend to your lower back after an eight-hour stint at your desk, look to one of the cheaper options in this round-up.

Sleek, lightweight and ultra-portable, we’ve always had a soft spot for the Theragun Mini, so it was like Christmas had come early when this swanky new second gen model arrived on our doorstep. What sets it apart from the original, you ask? It’s 30% smaller and lighter, so it’s even easier to carry around (it comes with a nifty travel case that hooks onto your rucksack) for sweet, sweet relief on the go.

You get three different attachments (the first gen only offers one) – a standard ball, a dampener for bony areas and a thumb to target trigger points – for a more personalised massaging experience and it connects to the Therabody App via Bluetooth so you can access an extensive library of wellness routines.

Unsurprisingly, it glided effortlessly over our skin and the three available power settings were oomphy enough to bring our waning muscles back to life. The rounded triangle design felt comfy in our hands, but due to its petite size, it wasn’t the best for larger muscle groups and hard-to-reach areas like the lower back.

You can only fit one attachment into the travel case but that’s a teeny flaw for an otherwise exceptional bit of kit. If you’re new to this percussive therapy business or you can’t justify shelling out tons on a heftier Theragun, this is the gun for you.

Made by athletes for athletes, the MyoPro is ideal for guys who like to train hard. It arrives with eight swapable tips at your disposal so you can fine-tune both your pre-workout prep and recovery.

Some of our favourites include the thumb (self-explanatory), the scraper (far more enjoyable than it sounds), the pinpoint and the bull, all designed to target different muscles and different discomfort levels. Then you’ve got the classic ball, fork, flat and soft options for when you’re particularly sore.

As it’s on the larger side, it is a bit of a burden to lug around, but it certainly delivers on performance and power, making it a worthwhile investment for those who take their training and recovery seriously.

Another innovation from Hyperice, the Vyper 3 is a vibrating foam roller that, according to the brand, amplifies the traditional benefits of foam rolling (increased range of motion, muscle relief and speedy recovery) with fast-motion vibrations and three intense speed settings.

It certainly helped our tester ramp up their R&R efforts, leaving them feeling “thoroughly massaged” after a session. They appreciated the slanted ridge pattern that allows you to pummel the pain away thoroughly, while the supple foam covering makes for a comfy massaging experience.

It’s a top choice for all-round recovery and dominant muscle groups but if you’re looking to target smaller muscles and niggly areas, scroll on. It’s also worth noting that the device emits a loud buzzing noise when on the floor (due to the vibrations), so we’d recommend timing your sessions carefully to avoid annoying your partner.

It’s quite noisy (not one for a quiet recovery session in front of the TV) but if you’re dedicated to keeping your body in fighting shape, we think it’s a worthy investment.

The Turonic G5 is a smart pick if you’re looking to dip your toe into percussive therapy and you’d appreciate some guidance. The sturdy device comes with detailed instructions and diagrams that show you how to perform a variety of massages using the different heads. There’s also just one control button to turn it on and off and cycle through the speeds, so you don’t have to fumble around working out how to use it.

There are five speed settings and seven different heads that provide relief in different areas, whether you’ve had a tough gym session or you’re suffering from WFH ailments. Although it’s not the smallest in this round-up, the G5 comes with a handy travel case for on-the-go recovery.

Our tester found the device dragged on their skin on the lower speed settings but that’s a recurring theme with many massage guns. Overall, it’s a pretty slick massager.

Our fifth Theragun entry so far, this small but mighty massage gun quickly became a favourite with our expert. The compact design makes it a cinch to pop in your kit bag and we liked the clean-cut aesthetic, though the solid triangular handle could be a bit tricky to grip at times.

But, if you want a massage gun you can take with you to the gym, portability is key, and it’s in this area that the Theragun Mini really delivers. Alongside its petite dimensions, it comes with a travel pouch for taking it on the go. It also scored top marks for immediate relief from soreness, so should be your first port of call after any high volume hypertrophy work.

It’s on the larger side and can be a tad cumbersome, but the controls couldn’t be simpler and boasts ample amounts of power, so you’ll be a percussive therapy pro in no time.

The Theragun Pro, pricey as it is, was given that name for a reason. It's favoured by experts and sports staff, but your average gym-goer needn't splash out that much money.

The Theragun Prime is almost identical, but provides five power settings with around half as much force, four attachments and a more than respectable 120 minutes of battery life. It connects to the same app and, at half the price, will still leave a big impact.

A cheaper option, but one that many professionals swear by (we first found out about it thanks to popular YouTube physiotherapists Bob & Brad). It doesn't reach the speeds that other options on this list do, and the five interchangeable heads are made from hard plastic rather than rubber, but it still does a good job on aching muscles.

Just make sure you watch videos for advice on proper technique, and don't just let it ravage your calf muscle for half an hour (we say that from experience.) Cordless, once charged it can provide over two hours of service. It's not too noisy, either.

That means you can reasonably carry it around with you at the gym, tucked away in your pocket, ready to iron out muscle complaints before and after workouts.

The amazing part is that it still packs a formidable punch with over 40lbs of stall force – not up there with the various heavyweights on this list, granted, but an impressive achievement nonetheless.

You’ve got four speeds and four heads, and the machine itself is made from aero-grade aluminium alloy, which helps to keep down noise and disperse heat. Combined with the six-hour battery life and reasonable price, the MyoLite is a perfect option for casual gym goers and a good additional device for long-time users who want an on-the-go option.

At under £300, the Hydragun is one of the more affordable premium massage devices on the market, as well as one of the quietist at 30-50dB – surprising, considering the fact that it can massage with 12mm of amplitude at up to 53 percussions per second.

We’re big fans of the design, specifically the ergonomic handle that sits at 99° to put less stress on the wrist. The seven massage heads include three steel options, for targeted pressure on large muscle groups, and it comes with an 18-month warranty too.

Selling for almost £100 less than its older brother, the Pulseroll Mini is pocket-friendly in both size and price. The drop is mainly felt in the product’s power – it tops out at 4000rpm, which is 300rpm less than the original – and the number of changeable heads is lower. But the Mini still offers an LCD screen and an impressive 6 hours of battery life, and its top speed packs more than enough might for a soft tissue post-gym massage. Nifty little travel bag too.

What do you want out of your machine? Do you want to take brutal, pile-driving revenge on your back complaints, or do you just want to treat yourself to a pleasant massage every now and again, ironing out some knots in the process? If it’s the latter, then you could do far worse than the Mebak 3.

It’s less powerful than many of the options on this list, but still reaches up to 3,200 ppm at 12mm deep amplitude, and comes with seven separate attachments (including the lesser seen ‘shovel’ shape, for the neck and lower back. There are rubber, cushioned and plastic options included). Considering the low price, it’s surprisingly quiet, light and holds a good amount of charge.
