Hot on the heels of The Last Of Us's runaway success, Amazon Prime has surveyed the post-apocalyptic landscape and landed on another critically acclaimed video game series to adapt: Fallout.

The long-running franchise is being transformed into an eight-part series by Jonathan Nolan (Westworld creator/brother of Chris) and his wife Lisa Joy, with showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner on board too.

Here’s everything else you need to know about the series (and how to watch it for free).

What’s the big idea?

First thing's first, Fallout is one of the most successful video game series ever released and it was only a matter of time before it got the prestige TV treatment. Created in 1997 by Tim Cain at Interplay Entertainment, it went on to spawn three more main series (with Fallout 5 still TBC) and then seven other spin-offs like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and Fallout Pinball.

According to the official synopsis for the TV show: “Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them above.”

It follows Lucy (Yellowjackets’ Ella Purnell), a vault dweller who leaves her shelter and steps out into the world 219 years later to find, well, everything’s not quite as charming as she’d expected.

Nolan told Vanity Fair: “It’s a dark world in many ways, but the games were fun to play, fun to explore, and I think that was a mandate for us: to make sure that it was enjoyable to spend time in this universe.”

Who else stars in the show?

Keep a look out for Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight), who plays the nose-less The Ghoul, Aaron Moten (Emancipation), Moisés Arias (The King of Staten Island), Sarita Choudhury (Homeland), Michael Emerson (Person of Interest), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool), Frances Turner (The Boys), Dave Register (Heightened) and Zach Cherry (Severance) all appear – plus Matt Berry, who will be playing a bot called Mr Handy.

How can I watch Fallout for free?

The series starts on Amazon Prime Video on 11 April, so if you’re already a Prime member then you’re sorted.

However, if you’re not signed up, Amazon is offering a free, 30-day trial of the Prime membership allowing you to access all eight episodes released on launch day.
