When your biggest selling points are a slightly better camera and tougher glass, you could be forgiven for thinking smartphone makers are running out of ideas.

Not so LG and their latest flagship phone, the G5. By way of a bold experiment it offers up a modular design – click a switch on the chassis and the bottom bezel comes away. This allows you to attach add-ons that thus far include the LG CAM Plus, a camera module that adds the comfy grip and physical controls of a standalone camera, and the LG Hi-Fi Plus, a Bang & Olufsen DAC that boosts sound quality.

Other modules including a VR headset, a 360 camera and a BB8-style toy droid will follow. The G5 also features a slide-out battery – meaning you can carry a pre-charged spare and swap it out as and when required.

Price of handset varies with service provider. LG CAM Plus, £80. LG Hi-Fi Plus With B&O Play, £150. lg.com/uk
